Summary
A quick overview of the commons:
the commons is a storytelling program developed to allow youth in detention centers the opportunity to learn new skills by creating their own digital stories. The purpose of the program is to assist youth in their eventual re-integration into society. By developing new skills and creating a sense of empowerment, the commons has the potential to impact their lives in a long term positive way, both while incarcerated and upon release. In addition, the total ownership of their content will help inmates regain a sense of control, and create a sense of purpose in their lives. Stories will be shared in confidential and public settings based on the comfort level and progress made by the inmates.
As mentioned previously, recidivism is related to many factors, one of which is the inmate’s ability to find employment. A clear need exists for inmates to be prepared for life outside of incarceration. Storytelling can be a way of visualizing life on the outside and processing the incidents of the past. In addition, the commons will teach inmates valuable skills that will serve as assets when seeking employment, and help to ensure their successful re-integration into society.
There is something powerful about the stories that incarcerated youth have to tell. Telling stories of their lives before they were incarcerated, or what they hope to do after they are released, may provide them with hope that can help sustain them during their incarceration. These stories give them something to hold on to, and something to look forward to, and they will have a noticeable impact on inmate success.
Although the inmates have a vested interest in their success, there are many others who have a stake in the commons. Individuals who are directly involved will include the detention center librarian, storytellers, volunteers, graduate students, and the AmeriCorps employee. In addition, therapists, priests, teachers, researchers, public librarians, and many others will also have an interest in this program.
Finally, the total cost for the commons program is approximately $4,800, with an in-kind donation amount of $15,000 through grant awards for marketing work and an employee through AmeriCorps. The costs above include an optional amount of $1,800 dollars leaving the total required costs at only $3,000 dollars- a modest figure compared to the total value of the program.
