Storytelling in Detention Centers http://www.quebecker.net/storytelling the commons storytelling program Wed, 29 Apr 2009 01:58:53 +0000 http://wordpress.org/?v=2.7.1 en hourly 1 the commons http://www.quebecker.net/storytelling/hello-world/ http://www.quebecker.net/storytelling/hello-world/#comments Fri, 17 Apr 2009 04:31:15 +0000 admin http://www.quebecker.net/storytelling/?p=1 The idea for the commons storytelling program began several years ago while its founders, Nell Fleming, Kalen Tjarks, and April Hosto were students in the LEEP Master’s program in Library and Information Sciences at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. After researching the impact of libraries for the incarcerated, the three had an idea- what if a storytelling program were provided for youth in juvenile detention centers? And not just any storytelling program- one that was interactive and engaging, that encouraged participation, and that helped inmates express themselves and learn valuable skills? The founders came up with a plan of action. Now, the only problem is getting funding. Which is where you come in…

With your support, we can move forward and implement the commons storytelling program in the juvenile detention center.

Click on the tab labeled what to find out more about what the commons program will entail.  The tab labeled who contains information about potential stakeholders and individuals who will be affected by the commons. For information on why storytelling is an effective tool in the juvenile detention center setting, check out whyHow much indicates the dollar costs of the commons.  The resources tab has a listing of resources we found useful in creating the commons.  For just a quick summary of the commons, check out the summary tab.  Finally, there are videos available that demonstrate other projects relating to literacy and juvenile detention centers.
